Brooklyn Bridge

My Mom works sometimes for a jewelry store, Robert Irwin Jewelers and one of the guys who works there just loves Brooklyn Bridge. He told my Mom it is the best NY style pizza in Memphis. 

Well, with all the pizza wars in our house we just had to try it! My Mom, the NYer, does love it. 

The place is an old time Italian restuarant with nice food, good service and alot of those extras that many restaurants are leaving behind, They give you bread with Olive oil and spices to start. There are table clothes and it is just kind of fancy even though the prices are not too high.

Monday is Pizza special night and that makes going a real treat. Anytime Pizza has a discount it is a good night.





We usually splurge and get toasted raviali and they are really tasty. I like the meat. Dad likes the cheese so it works out just fine. 

The Pizza has a medium crust and is just floppy enough to be NY style. The sauce is savory and the cheese is generously sprinkled and melty. It is good stuff. We can all agree on it and that is rare in the Pizza wars in our house.

I am always happy to go only problem it is far from home all they way out East!

Still if you are out there just try it. I bet you will like it too.

Rock the boat go to Rock'n Dough

Rock'n Dough is located in East Memphis, near Stash Furniture.
The inside of it is small but nicely furnished.
We go to Rock'n Dough when we have a pizza dispute.

That happens more often then you might guess.
When I fist had their pizza it was in a food truck. I remember the slice I got had bacon on it. I liked it. I think that is how the company started.

We usually have a large pizza with mushrooms, sausage, and sometimes olives. 
The pizza has a hand tossed
medium thick crust. It is a little doughy on the top. The cheese is gooey and very stretchy. The sauce is savory, the mushrooms are fresh, the olives are well olives.    
 One cool thing about them is the fancy pizza by the slice. They have the pizza out and the slices always look fresh.

I really like the place, it is not my favorite but it is a good pizza.

A first for Me at Tart

One of my favorite X-Librarians said that Tart was really good so I had to go and give it a try.

Tart is located on Cooper. It's a small European feeling coffee house/bakery. I expected it to be arranged like La Baguette with lots of treats but Tart had fewer, more elegant, hand crafted, fancier treats. I like a big selection so this seemed strange to me. I did see many things I wanted to try but this isn't a huge variety place. It is an elegant,crafted place.

We decided on a cherry tart and Pain Au Chocolate, with 2 different coffees. Mama got the Cubano, it was kind of smoky  which was nice. I got the Espresso. I Really liked it, it was my first Espresso ever! 

The pastries were good. The Pain Au Chocolate was really great. I especially liked it dunked in the coffee. The cherry tart could have used a hint of something- maybe citrus or spicy pepper. It was just a bit salty and not very sweet which was very nice! 

They had an interesting choice of breakfast and lunch foods all which sounded fabulous and I am eager to go again. There is a fancy salmon dish served in a jar with butter and baguette that sounds like a must try.

On the hunt for Japanese Food- I found Sakura

Sakura,

It's a long standing Japaneses restaurant on Poplar, you might have missed it. It is tucked behind a store or something.

The interior is nice, slightly fancy, Japaneses decor.

I ordered the sushi sampler and shrimp tempura lunch special. It was a lot of food.

The sushi part of the lunch came with four pieces of sushi: shrimp, crab,salmon,and tuna. It was all fresh and tasty. It was beautifuly plated. The wasbabi and ginger both had a nice flavor. One of the better plates of sushi I have had in a while.


The tempura part of the lunch had 2 huge fried shrimp, some veggies like sweet potato, squash, onion, and eggplant. The tempura batter was light and crispy. All of the veggies were well cooked. On the side of the tempura was some asian slaw, asian pickles, sliced fruit, and broccoli with a wasabicream sauce. Since this lunch special also came with soup and salad it was a gigantic meal.

I LOVED IT! 

If your starving then go to Sakura.

Sakura Japanese Restaurant

Pyros- choose wisely Padawan

There is this new place on Union Ave. called Pyro's.

Pyro's is all about pizza and it is kind of like Ghengus Grill, but for pizza. The way it works is you select the size, the sauce type, the meats, the veggies and cheese. It is fun to just go crazy with toppings and you can get pretty creative. The problem is you are the one who has to eat it! So if you choose lots of good stuff but it goes together in a strange way it is still your dinner. I would suggest thinking carefully about the type of things you like and then think if they blend together well.

      I got a snack size pizza with red sauce, mozzarella cheese, a bunch of olives, and Cajun chicken.

It was ok. The chicken had no taste and the crust is a cracker type, but the rest was good.

My Mom got a pizza with red sauce, mozzarella cheese just like me and she also got sun dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, sausage, mushrooms and other cheese. It was good to but still had a cracker crust- not her favorite at all. She won't go back. I think it is a NY thing.

My Dad got the pesto pizza it came pre-made and he did not decorate with anything else.He said it was good but I did not try it. Have you noticed that my Dad does not share often, and he usually has some basic choices. 

Pyro's is a cool place but needs to fix its crust or my Mom won't take me back.

Pyro's Fire Fresh Pizza

I have a tough Assignment for You Elwood's Shack

How do you eat through a menu?
Left to right?
Top to bottom?
Breakfast to lunch?
Or do you start with the specials?
How?

Well I have a solution, just try to go as often as possible and try something new every time.
Eventually you will eat though a menu and you will know what's good and what's really good.


That's my plan for Elwood's menu, I mean what is better the fish tacos,the clam chowder,or the brisket sandwich, there are just too many choices.

So it was my 3rd time going and I saw the specials and it had every thing I like including: clam chowder a must have and a new favorite ops!
I guess I am suppose to be telling you what I got and not how it was.

Well, I got the clam chowder, the Ruben, and the tamales. My Dad got the brisket sandwich.
Starting with the clam chowder it was perfectly exquisite and better than Boston. It is now my favorite.
Next the Ruben, first they house cure there own pastrami. I mean who else does that?
It was good but lacked that New York rye bread, which would have put it over the top! The beef was the best.

The tamales were good, but not the best item I ordered. They were covered in Chili and very fresh pico. They tasted great just not clam chowder great.



 

Dad said the brisket sandwich was good but I did not try it. I was too busy eating the clam chowder.  

1st and my favorite clam chowder it was creamy. You could tell there were clams in it and everything was the same size, deliciously delectable.
2nd fish tacos just yummy.
3rd brisket wrap tasted better than the brisket I had in Texas that says it all.
I'll keep you posted if my order changes.

A Shack that could be any 4 Star- Elwood's Shack

Ok, I was a bit skeptical...

My recent culinary adventurer brought me to Elwood's Shack,this little shack is bursting with flavor.

It's in the Lowes parking lot on Perkins,and like its name says its a shack... fun!



I ordered the fish tacos. They were 2 HUGE fish tacos, I mean huge. they were made with a 10 inch long flash fried flour tortilla. My mom got a brisket wrap sandwich but she had lunch envy. The fish was steel head trout, it had nice a texture. It also gave the taco a fresh taste. They had it seasoned and topped with fresh avocado and salad stuff. There was a real nice chewy cheese in there. I am not sure what kind.
Overall a great fish taco. My Mom thinks the best she has had.












The brisket wrap sandwich was a great. It was HUGE. There were some peppers and onions in it and a nice cheese.
The owner was a nice guy he talked to me about how he's from Texas and his brisket is marinade in Guinness stout and makes an interesting tex-memphis combo. Really, it is quite interesting.
  We swapped some cooking stories and he kindly gave me a sample of his spice rub to try at home. He sells it too. I hope to go back soon and bring them a sample of my rub.
So if you are HUNGRY and really want to fill up check out the Shack- Elwood's Shack. It is the place to be.

PS. I HAD to go back to Elwood's- I am planning to eat my way through the menu! I tried the meatball sub and the roast beef sandwich. Good, but not Fish Taco good!
