At's A Pizza - on Union

The Memphis Flyer did a food review of a new Pizza place in the old Petra Cafe on Union. Since Pizza is a great food and fun to blog about I convinced my Dad to go. Since Dad likes Pizza it was easy.

The place is nice, a bit simple but it is just starting out so I did not expect a ton of personality yet. It is not a chain so there is no packaged decor just a good guy who wants to own a business and make pizza.

We ordered the toasted ravioli with meat sauce and they were ok. Not a hand made fresh product more of a frozen food fried. I still liked them and we ate them all.

The pizza was good. Well, it was not great because I  ordered green olives and they were really generous so it was just too salty, that was my fault. The olives were nice. I don't think I will put fresh basil on a pizza again unless I make it! The sausage part had a bit of an odd taste not bad but not great either. The crust was handmade and it was perfectly baked. The sauce was not sweet and the cheese was well, cheesy.

I think we will give it another go. It was not awesome gotta have it. But a man with a dream deserves a shot at my business and I really think it will get to be a great restaurant

Brooklyn Bridge

My Mom works sometimes for a jewelry store, Robert Irwin Jewelers and one of the guys who works there just loves Brooklyn Bridge. He told my Mom it is the best NY style pizza in Memphis.

Well, with all the pizza wars in our house we just had to try it! My Mom, the NYer, does love it.

The place is an old time Italian restuarant with nice food, good service and alot of those extras that many restaurants are leaving behind, They give you bread with Olive oil and spices to start. There are table clothes and it is just kind of fancy even though the prices are not too high.

Monday is Pizza special night and that makes going a real treat. Anytime Pizza has a discount it is a good night.

We usually splurge and get toasted raviali and they are really tasty. I like the meat. Dad likes the cheese so it works out just fine.

The Pizza has a medium crust and is just floppy enough to be NY style. The sauce is savory and the cheese is generously sprinkled and melty. It is good stuff. We can all agree on it and that is rare in the Pizza wars in our house.

I am always happy to go only problem it is far from home all they way out East!

Still if you are out there just try it. I bet you will like it too.

Rock the boat go to Rock'n Dough

Rock'n Dough is located in East Memphis, near Stash Furniture.
The inside of it is small but nicely furnished.
We go to Rock'n Dough when we have a pizza dispute.

That happens more often then you might guess.
When I fist had their pizza it was in a food truck. I remember the slice I got had bacon on it. I liked it. I think that is how the company started.
We usually have a large pizza with mushrooms, sausage, and sometimes olives.
The pizza has a hand tossed
medium thick crust. It is a little doughy on the top. The cheese is gooey and very stretchy. The sauce is savory, the mushrooms are fresh, the olives are well olives.

One cool thing about them is the fancy pizza by the slice. They have the pizza out and the slices always look fresh.

I really like the place, it is not my favorite but it is a good pizza.

I'm at a loss Lost pizza Co.

Lost Pizza Co.

Well, usually I don't blog about sub par pizza but.,Lost Pizza Co left a lot to be desired. My Dad went before me and had the cheese pasta and didn't like it, and I went to give them a second shot.
The interior is really neat. I mean a wall of doors how ironic and countless other things. I loved all the art and vintage stuff. It looked really cool.

But the pizza now that's another story, we ordered cheese, sausage, mushrooms, and pepperoni. We divided it into half sausage half pepperoni all mushroom.
Logan Guleff Memphis, TN pizza MasterChef Jr 2 USAThe crust tasted frozen and they put the pepperoni under the cheese which kinda steamed the pepperoni, the mushrooms were tasteless, the sausage tasted bad too. I know I am kinda snobish when it comes to pizza but really! I did not like it at all. My friend however thought it was ok and he would go back, but not me.

If you want to hang out someplace that looks cool go... but I warned you.

Pyros- choose wisely Padawan

There is this new place on Union Ave. called Pyro's.
Pyro's is all about pizza and it is kind of like Ghengus Grill, but for pizza. The way it works is you select the size, the sauce type, the meats, the veggies and cheese. It is fun to just go crazy with toppings and you can get pretty creative. The problem is you are the one who has to eat it! So if you choose lots of good stuff but it goes together in a strange way it is still your dinner. I would suggest thinking carefully about the type of things you like and then think if they blend together well.
I got a snack size pizza with red sauce, mozzarella cheese, a bunch of olives, and Cajun chicken.
It was ok. The chicken had no taste and the crust is a cracker type, but the rest was good.
My Mom got a pizza with red sauce, mozzarella cheese just like me and she also got sun dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, sausage, mushrooms and other cheese. It was good to but still had a cracker crust- not her favorite at all. She won't go back. I think it is a NY thing.
My Dad got the pesto pizza it came pre-made and he did not decorate with anything else.He said it was good but I did not try it. Have you noticed that my Dad does not share often, and he usually has some basic choices.

Pyro's is a cool place but needs to fix its crust or my Mom won't take me back.

Boscos of Overton Square

A recent craving brought me to Boscos, this microbrewery is in Overton square.
The square is in a new revitalization but this old microbrewery has not changed much over the years, it's still going strong as a tradition in the square and midtown.

Our table ordered two pizza's: we ordered the Chesapeake, the Palermo.
I chose the Chesapeake, it had shrimp, fresh shell fish, and bay scallops, with a pesto sauce and white cheddar cheese. It had a alot of flavor. The Chesapeake pizza is like the sea under a microscope.I am not sure I would have made it the same way but it was good.
The Palermo it had pepperoni, sausage, and  portabella mushrooms.

I didn't have a slice of it, unfortunately. My Dad liked it and ate it all.
They gave us some fresh focaccia bread served with an olive oil and herb dip.

I liked my dinner- I think it might be a better spot if you could try the beer but I can't do that yet. The brewery equipment looked really cool though.

Aldo's Pizza its not "ALL DOUGH"

I was exploring downtown, following the Trolley line twisting and turning finally I made it to Main Street. I was hot, hungry, and a little sweaty. I stumbled on Aldo's Pizza. Being me I had to go inside and have some pizza. I saw a metro restaurant with a hint of hipster flair. They have a HUGE window showing where they make the dough. I had to watch- there was huge ball of dough. They were kneading and working it! How fun is that!

I sat down and ordered a big PIE. I think it was a T- Rex, and some garlic knots. The knots came first and they were pretty good, kinda chewy and they had a garlic oil which was nice. I like the marinara sauce but really I needed a bit more.

Then the pizza came- it was good! Hand tossed a bit of a butter oil crust and some nice quality cheese. The sauce was a touch sweet. I liked the toppings they, too were high quality and delish us.

I know they have sandwiches and I have seen them walk past me but I have not tried one.  They also have other specialty

pizza the most intriguing is the vodka sauce one, it is pink so my Dad will never buy it! The special special slice every day can be a great treat for lunch.

The place is a bit noisy but the pizza makes up for it! I really enjoy pizza there. I get to go every so often- it is a nice change from Ferraro's.

If you are walking around on Main and thinking your hungry- Aldo's is a great place to stop!
