At's A Pizza - on Union

The Memphis Flyer did a food review of a new Pizza place in the old Petra Cafe on Union. Since Pizza is a great food and fun to blog about I convinced my Dad to go. Since Dad likes Pizza it was easy.

The place is nice, a bit simple but it is just starting out so I did not expect a ton of personality yet. It is not a chain so there is no packaged decor just a good guy who wants to own a business and make pizza.

We ordered the toasted ravioli with meat sauce and they were ok. Not a hand made fresh product more of a frozen food fried. I still liked them and we ate them all.

The pizza was good. Well, it was not great because I  ordered green olives and they were really generous so it was just too salty, that was my fault. The olives were nice. I don't think I will put fresh basil on a pizza again unless I make it! The sausage part had a bit of an odd taste not bad but not great either. The crust was handmade and it was perfectly baked. The sauce was not sweet and the cheese was well, cheesy.

I think we will give it another go. It was not awesome gotta have it. But a man with a dream deserves a shot at my business and I really think it will get to be a great restaurant

A first for Me at Tart

One of my favorite X-Librarians said that Tart was really good so I had to go and give it a try.

Tart is located on Cooper. It's a small European feeling coffee house/bakery. I expected it to be arranged like La Baguette with lots of treats but Tart had fewer, more elegant, hand crafted, fancier treats. I like a big selection so this seemed strange to me. I did see many things I wanted to try but this isn't a huge variety place. It is an elegant, crafted place.

We decided on a cherry tart and Pain Au Chocolate, with 2 different coffees. Mama got the Cubano, it was kind of smoky  which was nice. I got the Espresso. I Really liked it, it was my first Espresso ever!

The pastries were good. The Pain Au Chocolate was really great. I especially liked it dunked in the coffee. The cherry tart could have used a hint of something- maybe citrus or spicy pepper. It was just a bit salty and not very sweet which was very nice!

They had an interesting choice of breakfast and lunch foods all which sounded fabulous and I am eager to go again. There is a fancy salmon dish served in a jar with butter and baguette that sounds like a must try.

I think Espresso might be addicting!

Seconds for me at Second Line

Second Line by Chef Kelly English,

I have seen Chef Kelly English around; at Home Depot, the Easy Way, and all over town but never the less I have never eaten at Iris although attempts were made, and you know the outcome no Iris for me.
So when Chef Kelly English was opening a new restaurant where he could get "Down and dirty" I was overjoyed.

On Mothers day we went to dinner at Second Line.
The wait list was LONG but we some how made it in and got to enjoy dinner.
I was being intrigued by not only the po'boys, appetizers, side items, and the plates.  The menu is a bit odd but the flavors sounded like they would not disappoint.

I ended up having the shrimp appetizer which was named after the Grizzly's but has some profanity so just go there and get the shrimp appetizer with Tabasco aioli.
They were quite delicious cooked to perfection and could use some more aioli which was also delicious. The hint of tabasco gave them a nice kick but did not overpower the shrimp.
I shared the oyster po'boy with my Mama the po'boy was divine and the oysters were happily bunched together and it was exquisitely cooked. The sandwich was toasted and had fresh salad stuff it could have used some of that good Tabasco aioli otherwise very good.

Dad's sandwich was shredded beef with a swiss cheese, he said it was ok. He got the onion rings were a little soggy. Our Groceries included  red beans and rice which had sausage slices in it but was a little overcooked.  kick butt cold slaw had a very Asian flare and I loved it.

P.S: The atmosphere felt like a live band was playing but there was not a band there it could be a good addition.
P.P.S sorry but I forgot about the unsweetened tea with simple syrup which was out of this world good!

Pyros- choose wisely Padawan

There is this new place on Union Ave. called Pyro's.
Pyro's is all about pizza and it is kind of like Ghengus Grill, but for pizza. The way it works is you select the size, the sauce type, the meats, the veggies and cheese. It is fun to just go crazy with toppings and you can get pretty creative. The problem is you are the one who has to eat it! So if you choose lots of good stuff but it goes together in a strange way it is still your dinner. I would suggest thinking carefully about the type of things you like and then think if they blend together well.
I got a snack size pizza with red sauce, mozzarella cheese, a bunch of olives, and Cajun chicken.
It was ok. The chicken had no taste and the crust is a cracker type, but the rest was good.
My Mom got a pizza with red sauce, mozzarella cheese just like me and she also got sun dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, sausage, mushrooms and other cheese. It was good to but still had a cracker crust- not her favorite at all. She won't go back. I think it is a NY thing.
My Dad got the pesto pizza it came pre-made and he did not decorate with anything else.He said it was good but I did not try it. Have you noticed that my Dad does not share often, and he usually has some basic choices.

Pyro's is a cool place but needs to fix its crust or my Mom won't take me back.

Ps. They do have a build it yourself salad: the same advice stands.

Huey's a Memphis tradition.

If you live in Memphis you have probably gone to Huey's, it's a Memphis tradition.
MasterChef Jr 2 Logan Guleff at Huey's Memphis, Tennessee BlogIf you want a nice time, go to Huey's.
If you want an average meal, go to Huey's.
If you want trivia, go to Huey's.
If you want live music, go to Huey's.
If you want a family friendly place, go to Huey's

So as you can tell the place is all in the vibe, but its a nice place to go and hang out.

It's all in the atmosphere and having a good time.

I like their pickles and the kids meals come with free ice cream, you just can't beat that!
I usually get the cheese burger, but I really just want pickles. I like them.
My Dad gets the Senor Huey burger, I never tried it so I cant say if it is good. My Dad really does like it.
My Mom gets the cheese burger just like me.

The food is not too special. However the Burgers usually win the Best Burger of Memphis. I think it is because we just all like to go there.
To wrap it up the food is so so, but the vibe is cool.

(I love the PICKLES!)

Boscos of Overton Square

A recent craving brought me to Boscos, this microbrewery is in Overton square.
The square is in a new revitalization but this old microbrewery has not changed much over the years, it's still going strong as a tradition in the square and midtown.

Our table ordered two pizza's: we ordered the Chesapeake, the Palermo.
I chose the Chesapeake, it had shrimp, fresh shell fish, and bay scallops, with a pesto sauce and white cheddar cheese. It had a alot of flavor. The Chesapeake pizza is like the sea under a microscope.I am not sure I would have made it the same way but it was good.
The Palermo it had pepperoni, sausage, and  portabella mushrooms.

I didn't have a slice of it, unfortunately. My Dad liked it and ate it all.
They gave us some fresh focaccia bread served with an olive oil and herb dip.

I liked my dinner- I think it might be a better spot if you could try the beer but I can't do that yet. The brewery equipment looked really cool though.
