The Quest for the best sushi continues.

Sekisui

On my quest for the best sushi in Memphis, I always drive by this little midtown sushi place and always wonder how good is the sushi ????

Well, not to long ago I tried Sekisui, its an older sushi restaurant. It is slightly fancy but still casual. They have some nice music playing, overall pretty zen feeling, it had some wear on the tables, but it was still nice.

I looked at the specials and saw 2 pieces of prime tuna Nigiri and uni Nigiri. So I went out of my usual sushi and ordered a half order of the special.

I also ordered 2 pieces of tuna, and 2 pieces of salmon Nigiri. My Mama ordered Gyozo and I ate the miso soup and salad.
Mama thought that the dumplings were very good and that they were  the best dumplings in the city!

The miso soup was pretty much like all the other miso soups, but it had a better type of seaweed in the soup.

The salmon was good quality, a little stringy, the prime tuna had a better flavor than the normal tuna. It tasted fatty, yet succulent but again, a little stringy.

The tuna was very delicious, perfect, not stringy, not fishy, just perfect in all aspects, easily complemented by the wasabi and ginger.

The uni was very fresh, and tasty I have had bad uni before and it tasted like avocados, but this uni was sweet nicely flavored, well balanced but the texture was a little to weird for me.

Definitely one of Memphis's higher end sushi restaurants.

Tug's on Mud Island

I got to go downtown to Mud Island and try Tug's. It has a Coast Guard, tug boat kind of theme with some really tasty food. It is on the river so it fits.

I tried a BBQ burger on a brioche bun and was surprised at how tasty it was. The sweet bread would normally not appeal to me but with the BBQ sauce and the bacon it was really good.

My Dad has a roast beef/prime rib type sandwich, which he liked, however he had burger envy!

There were lots of people enjoying Lobster Mac and Cheese and a Rib Eye special but that was not what I wanted. It did look really good.

The restaurant was very busy but we did not have to wait long. The food was fresh and tasty. It seemed like a good date place- but what do I know I am only 11.

The Brushmark

Did you know there is a restaurant in the Brooks Museum?
There is- The Brushmark.

I recently went there for a fancy lunch. Any time you can enjoy a meal in a museum you are in for a treat. The environment is so unique. I LOVE the Brooks. My favorite painting is the Bookshelf up on the third floor. I do get to go to the Brooks often, but this is my first meal there.

So what was the food like?

It was fancy and elegant but still classical. I ordered the gazpacho and a Reuben.  I have to say I did not care for the gazpacho it was too cold and well, a bit strange. I have never had it before so I might not be the best judge.  I like the Reuben it has a great raisin mustard, and a bacon flavor that was pretty nice.

My Mom had a delicious salad and the crepe of the day. Chicken and Ricotta with a Monterrey jack sauce. The crepe was light and perfectly prepared. The chicken was wonderfully seasoned and had a nice Mexican flair. We both thought it had too much ricotta. But it was still very good.

The cheese cake for dessert was pretty nice- not as good as my Mom's but, still was pretty tasty.

The view out the window into a very luscious green space was stunning.

My only complaint was not price- this is a very affordable spot for lunch- but our waiter was a bit,
well, stiff. He did not seem comfortable with kids.

That being said you probably aren't a kid, so get dressed up and head out to the Brooks. Feed your artsy side.

Don't Nuke it...... Newk it.....

Repost from the past.

I tried Newks for lunch with my Grandma. We ordered lots of food a shrimp poor boy, a sandwich, and a pizza.
The shrimp poor boy was one of the best I have had. The shrimp were so tender. I did not taste much seasoning but there were 12 of them. That's a lot!! See the shrimp- yum.

The Club Royal was very good. You could taste all the meats. Roast Beef, Turkey and Salami, if there were more I can't remember them. It had a huge roll of them. The mayonnaise was fabulous. It was very fresh and I devoured it.

The pizza was alright- but I would not go there for the pizza. I know it looks great but the crust was just not my favorite. I did however manage to eat more than half of it.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very, very ,very clean.
It was pricey.
Newks is a chain and I went to the one on Poplar by Estate, I think.
