Not just another Taco el Mezcal

It is hot out so go grab some spicy Mexican food at El Mezcal. I know it is an older chain of somewhat local Mexican food but that isn't a bad thing.
Tried and true, you know what to expect and it always delivers.
The inside is old school Mexican not a bit of the new trendy decor. It is comfy, and I really like the cactus lights.

I like to go because it is the only place my Mom lets me pick her food. I usually pick something new each time but the spicy Chipotle chicken is my favorite dish there. The cream sauce is layered in spicy flavor and the hint of smoke makes it my favorite.  I like the thin chicken and the rice is always pretty tasty. We don't usually get the gauc but I imagine it is pretty good too. Dad usually gets a ranchero steak and he likes it.

El Mezcal will give you a good salsa crispy chips and a pretty big plate of food. Good even for 2 meals. The prices are ok and I just  am happy to go. If you have not tried it and are tired of the small hipster plates out there then go!

Babalu a new view!

Overton Square is a trendy happening place. New, fun, exciting and pricey restaurants are popping up all over.
I just went to Babalu. It is a Mexican fusion place on the square. It looks kind of retro and feels open and fresh.
I got to try the guacamole - it is the house specialty and is made table side. I think that that is really awesome, just as cool as watching the hibachi steak guys, well, almost. They use fresh avocado, salt, lime juice, sun dried tomato paste, onions and salt and pepper. It can be as chunky or creamy as you like. For me chunky is better. I like a bit more pow in my guac but it was good.

The family shared some small plates. I picked the calamari. I asked for some of the wasabi mayo on the side. The squid was fresh and crispy. It was ok, good but not great.  I also tried the lamb taco. It was like a lamb gyro, the meat was pulled and the blue corn tortilla was the best part of the dish. It complimented the lamb in a surprising way. My Dad chose steak on a stick, it sounds like my Dad would love. Steak on a stick what could be manlier? The portion was small, and it had a sweet reduction on it and some potato hash on the side. Dad said he would not get it again.

Babalu is a cool place to go but I would go with friends and when you are not starving!

The Smoke on Summer Los Picosos Mexican Cantina

If your feeling brave and you want an authentic Mexican experience then try Los Picosos on Summer Ave. When you drive up you'll see a lot of smoke coming from the back, you'll wonder what they are cooking. It took me a while to figure it out. They are grilling up some delicious chicken, but only on the weekends.
Now they marinade the chicken, chop it into large pieces and serve it with rice, beans, salad, and tortillas. This chicken looks like it just got off the expressway from Flavorville. It is not too expensive and is a major treat. I love the smokey taste and the tender juicy meat. It is  a must try.
Logan Guleff Memphis Tennessee MasterChef Jr 2They give you chips and 3 flavors of salsa. It can be tons of fun to mix them and great a unique blend.

The other menu item we enjoy is the Chori Queso- a hot plate of melted cheese with chorizo mixed in. They line the skillet with tortillas so the cheese does not burn and it is a really big dish. I know it is probably a heart attack on a plate but it is well worth the risk.

I have had the tacos and the tortas too but the chicken is really the best choice! I have heard rumors of a big plate of mixed meat but have yet to try it.

Wait till Saturday be brave and go try it!

La Michoacana

I went to ,Taqueria Camino De Michoacan not to be confused with theMichoacana ice cream one but a mexican restaurant and bakery off Jackson Ave.  It was a nice place they had a bakery and a lot of sweet yummy looking things like: some weird doughnuts, buns, rolls, and a bunch of other stuff that I looked at but couldn't understand.
It all looked SO good  I couldn't pick but I decided on a doughnut. It was cool but not quite me, to be truthful I don't much like sweets. It has a more doughy texture than an American doughnut. It had a nice sweet icing  and it was very pretty.

Now back to the meal, they had three different salsas one of the three is a regular salsa, just your basic salsa, another one is a green salsa which I didn't like it, not me, and last one was  a smoky spicy salsa which was quite enjoyable.  I shared a torta with my Mom it was ok. It was on nice soft bread, spread with beans and carne asada. I like the one at La Guadualapana better but we did eat it all.
My Dad had some kind of steak thing it look kinda good but my Dad REALLY loves steak so he ate it ALL so unfortunately I did not get a bit. (so sad)
Overall it was good but with so many Mexican places to try in Memphis, I am not sure how soon we will go back.
