Schweinehaus : A new cuisine in Overton Square.
Another new restaurant opened up in Overton Square in that great building that used to be Paulettes.
Schweinehaus is a German restaurant, a very fun and happening place.
The decor was nice slightly old fashioned but still nice.
Most of the waiters were wearing very funny T-shirts, worth the trip just for the shirts. I won't tell you, so you can be surprised.
I ordered the Spatzle Mac and Cheese. It is a mac and cheese with eggy dumplings and baked crispy. I liked it. The dumplings had a great texture and the cheese sauce was nice and not grainy. I don't really like Mac and Cheese, so it was a surprise.
I also ordered a Bratwurst with potato pancakes and sauerkraut. I liked the Bratwurst it had a great meaty flavor, the sides were nice too.
Dad ordered the Sausage plate full of like 4 kinds of sausages. I had a few bites of the Wild boar, the Venison, the Bratwurst, and Weisswurst. The wild boar was my favorite on the table. It just had a great flavor and texture. It was awesome. I thought the venison was a bit sweet but nice and not too gamey, if you know what I mean. Probably the sugar helped with that.
Dad liked it and he enjoyed all the different types of sausage. Now Dad would have liked to have an added meat to off set all that sausage but I thought it was all really good.
Mama had the Weisswurst and the sides. The Weisswurst had a great light flavor and was complemented by the mustard perfectly. We did use all the fancy mustards that came with Dad's plate. I really preferred the whole grain, one of the three was just too sweet for me.
I bet Mama a dollar that she could not cook the German food, days later, I had to give up my dollar. Mama can cook German food!
I surprised myself trying all this, not because I TRIED it, but because I really liked it all. Mama has made me "German", 3 times since going, and I am happy to eat it every time.
Thanks Schweinhaus!

Logan
PS. So try something new and unusual! Be warned it is a bit pricey like most of the new places in Overton Square.

When you eat at BoneFish all that's left are bones.
I had a chance to have a celebration dinner a while back and my Dad thought that BoneFish would be a big treat. It is all the way out in Collierville so it felt like an adventure.
I loved the inside it was really fancy and we had a nice table. It did feel like a treat.
I ordered the Lobster which I have only had one other time. The 2 tails were grilled and split open with a really nice clarified butter. I think they were just a bit tough but the lobster had a great taste. The other food on the table were some good looking fish and chips, and a huge burger, which I must say looked too good to not have just a touch of burger envy!
I really prefer to eat at local restaurants but for a chain it was very good.
So if you have a date coming or a business dinner you might want to give it a try.

Or the T.A.C.O T.R.U.C.K.
The T.A.C.O T.R.U.C.K. is parked outside of a gas station
on Summer Ave. near Elwood's Shack. It serves tacos obviously, and burritos, and quesadillas just to name a few.
There are several types of meat you can order including, carne asada, spicy pork, carnitas, and spicy chorizo.
The tacos are very inexpensive only a dollar!
I've tried the carne asada, the spicy pork, the carnitas, and the spicy chorizo.
I like the spicy pork its my favorite its nice and hot and the pork has a great flavor.
I have also tried the melon water drink it was tasty.
Its a great food truck so stop by when you need an inexpensive lunch.

At last......... Iris
Chef Kelly English and me |
Until now!
My Dad's friend Dave is a foodie and a huge supporter of my food adventures. He invited me to join him and his wife Marsha for dinner at Iris, how cool! The decor was very elegant and slightly boutique, overall a nice homey feeling for the restaurant.
Amuses Bouches |
Dave, Marsha, Mama, and Dad, basically everyone other than me ordered "the short rib raviolo" in delicious braising liquid sauce. It was juicy, very hearty, and savory. The short ribs were so tender that they melted in your mouth, overall quite delicious.
The Short Rib Raviolo |
I ordered The Knuckle sandwich, it was an open faced lobster sandwich with a small salad on top of it, the pieces of lobster were HUGE. The biggest pieces of lobster I've ever seen, and the sweetest, best flavored lobster too!
The Knuckle Sandwich |
Mama and Dave ordered the surf and turf. It was a New York strip steak stuffed with oysters and blue cheese and it came with some sauteed potatoes with Allen Benton bacon in it. The whole thing was divine and since Mama is allergic to shrimp, she had never had surf and turf before, so it was great.
Flat iron steak |
Marsha had The Alaskan halibut, sweet potatoes, corn and tomato succotash. Marsha liked the dish a lot.
Grilled Jack |
I had the grilled Jack with gulf shrimp local tomatoes and a harissa, an intricately flavored spiced sauce in a french press. It was delicious and super awesome to have that sauce poured table side (see video below).
When you have had a great dinner you know that desert is just as good. Marsha had a salted caramel cake and ice cream.
Caramel cake and ice cream |
Dave got the peach pie.

Not just another Taco el Mezcal
It is hot out so go grab some spicy Mexican food at El Mezcal. I know it is an older chain of somewhat local Mexican food but that isn't a bad thing.
Tried and true, you know what to expect and it always delivers.
The inside is old school Mexican not a bit of the new trendy decor. It is comfy, and I really like the cactus lights.
I like to go because it is the only place my Mom lets me pick her food. I usually pick something new each time but the spicy Chipotle chicken is my favorite dish there. The cream sauce is layered in spicy flavor and the hint of smoke makes it my favorite. I like the thin chicken and the rice is always pretty tasty. We don't usually get the gauc but I imagine it is pretty good too. Dad usually gets a ranchero steak and he likes it.
El Mezcal will give you a good salsa crispy chips and a pretty big plate of food. Good even for 2 meals. The prices are ok and I just am happy to go. If you have not tried it and are tired of the small hipster plates out there then go!
